Death of Michael Jackson
Posted by Mark Thomas on June 26, 2009 4:30 PM
When the office rang me last night to break the news that Michael Jackson was being rushed to hospital, the first instinct, I'm afraid, was to suspect a publicity stunt.
Within the hour, of course, it was clear that this was a very genuine, and terribly sad, story, and that one of the true icons of the pop music industry was dead.
Tweeting from Shanghai
Posted by Mark Thomas on May 29, 2009 4:17 PM
Liverpool is one of only two UK cities, the other being London, to exhibit at the Shanghai Expo in 2010, which is expected to attract 70m visitors and could generate £50m for the city in the next 10 years.
I'm currently in Shanghai on a fact-gathering trip ahead of the Expo and I'll be blogging in detail on what I've discovered when I return.
In the meantime, you can follow the live blog below, which I will be tweeting to from the Far East as I'm able, along with Martyn Best from Paver Smith.
You can find out more about the Expo here.

I am sitting surrounded by a quite remarkable blur of activity, in our new-look newsroom, on day three of our new editorial structure.
We have been producing the Liverpool Daily Post, our sister title the Liverpool Echo, and a host of weekly newspapers using a radical new system since Sunday.

Alistair Darling's Pre-Budget Statement - will it help?
Posted by Mark Thomas on November 24, 2008 5:53 PM
The big headlines in today's pre-budget statement had been so well trailed in "leaks" to the Sunday papers and the BBC that the reduction in VAT to 15% and the planned increase in income tax for high earners to 45p in the pound came as no surprise this afternoon.
The VAT move will free up £12.5bn for consumers, always assuming that retailers are a bit fairer with their customers than the banking community and pass the reductions on in full. That has to be good news, both for the retail and manufacturing sectors.

The lessons England fans should learn from the Croatians
Posted by Mark Thomas on September 11, 2008 2:18 PM
It was great, and not a little surprising, to see England perform so well in their 4-1 away win against Croatia last night.
I also thought, though, that it was quite instructive to hear the way the Croatian supporters reacted as it became clear they were to lose their first ever home competitive international fixture.

Our continued commitment to Liverpool
Posted by Mark Thomas on September 5, 2008 7:01 PM
The radio airwaves and website forums of Merseyside have been buzzing with angry reaction to our announcement that we are shifting printing of the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo to Oldham.
Much of the indignation stems from misunderstandings, so today we would like to set the record straight.
Our newspapers will continue to be researched, written, designed and created in the heart of Liverpool, to provide the best and most in depth news coverage of Merseyside. Hundreds of people will continue to be employed by us here in Liverpool to achieve that.
