Who will be next after Fernando Torres and Phil Jagielka?

Posted by Mark Thomas on July 4, 2007 1:27 PM |

At last, some activity today on the Premiership transfer market locally, with Liverpool signing Fernando Torres for a club record £26.5m while Everton's patient pursuit of £4m Phil Jagielka finally bore fruit.
It is always a difficult time of year for our sports team, because a lot of less reputable newspapers and websites are buzzing with rumours, many of which are little short of silly, about which players might be on their way to Merseyside.

It's an infectious trait. Even my taxi driver taking me home from our Regional Business Awards last week was adamant that Carlos Tevez was in town, on the verge of putting pen to paper at Anfield. Still waiting to see that one come to pass!
The transfer market is notoriously fluid and unpredictable, and the media are often used by clubs and agents as part of elaborate games of bluff and counter-bluff as deals are negotiated.
Some of the stuff that comes to the ears of sports reporters is difficult to credit, but also makes for exciting copy at a time when nothing is happening on the field.
The problem is that this kind of speculation whips up a lot of false hope and expectation amongst fans, and that is why we steer clear of it.
We value our reputation for bringing you reliable, accurate information throughout our newspaper, and the skill of our sports team is tested as they sift through all the nonsense and spin, to bring you the accurate news on what is going on.
Who knows what twists and turns the summer yet has in store on the transfer market for our clubs? One thing you can be sure of is that you will get the straight, unsensationalised, inside track from the Liverpool Daily Post.
