"Blood Brothers" gets 2008 off to a flying start

Posted by Mark Thomas on January 3, 2008 5:50 PM |

Congratulations to everyone involved with the new production of Willy Russell's musical "Blood Brothers" at the Liverpool Empire.
Penny and I went to the press show on Wednesday night, and we were both mightily impressed. Great performances, an excellent set, and of course the script and music remain as powerful, funny, and moving as ever.

I had seen the musical a few times before over the years, but I've never seen a better performance of it than this one. Lyn Paul, who I am old enough to remember as a New Seeker, was particularly impressive as Mrs Johnson. She has a fantastic voice.
Part of the fun for me was in seeing Penny's reaction to it, as she had never seen Blood Brothers before. Needless to say, she really enjoyed it, and you can't help but feel a touch of envy for someone seeing a Liverpool classic like this for the first time.
It's a great evening out, and in my book the perfect 2008 curtain raiser.
